A World of Walls/Borderlines, the theme of Grenoble's 2019 photo month, presents a series of snapshots around the world telling, through the medium and paradoxical springboard of walls and borders, a bit of the folly of these frontlines throughout history, and the freedoms they have opposed or still oppose. For my part:

Cambodia, the tools of reconciliation.

You can't escape recent history when you visit Cambodia. Neang Sok, a student from Phnom Penh who drives a tuk-tuk to pay for his studies, was adamant that we understand why his country was still in such a state. We were convinced by our guide and he led us to the two main places of memory of the Khmer Rouge genocide, Choeung Ek and S 21, in Phnom Penh. Drawn by the solemnity of the places, it is the whole of humanity that is summoned to make its self-criticism.

In Russia, the history of communism is not denied.

To continue the exploration of the places of memory, concerning communism, Russia takes a posture all in lightness. Unlike Ukraine, which got rid of all these symbols with loss and crash, the city of Moscow decided to gather them in a park, on the banks of the Moskva, the park of fallen statues. There are sculptures of the great communist leaders but also works of official art created by artists at the orders.

Berlin maintains the memory of Europe.

After Southeast Asia, back to Europe with our afflictions firmly rooted in history. Berlin is the ideal place to rewind the film. In the days of the Cold War, East and West also competed on the field of culture by multiplying museums on both sides of the wall. After the fall of the wall, museums that speak of this period were created, such as Check Point Charlie. The Jewish Museum, entrusted to the Polish-born architect Daniel Libeskind, was inaugurated in 2001 and affirms to the world the newfound tolerance in Germany.
